Away From Home
Spid also creates work away from home.
Our show Childsplay took audiences on an interactive journey through children’s play from the 1950s to today, whilst moving them through the outdoor spaces in Normand Park, Fulham, to personal mp3 soundtracks featuring memories of play from local residents. We toured Childsplay to open spaces around the UK in Bath, Birmingham,Newcastle and Nottingham before returning to London for a production marketed by Riverside Studios.
The show got great press. Read EverythingTheatre’s and Third Age Matters’ enthusiastic reviews. The Times Educational Supplement ran a great feature on it. The show was part of The Independent’s Critic’s Choice in their Childrens’ section, featured by the Ham and High and pick of the week by Urban Explorer. The Guardian , Buzz newspaper and Time Out also recommended it for viewing. So did BBC news last year – when Total Theatre magazine and British Theatre Guide both loved it.
Our UK council estate tour of The Burning Tower in association with Bush Theatre was funded by Arts Council England , quickly sold out , and was seen on London Live , RT , BBC , The Times , TV news :‘A passionate defence of social housing,’ ★★★★ The Guardian, ‘A moving love letter to social housing,’ ★★★★ The Stage, ‘Next stop must be the Commons’ ★★★★ The Morning Star The script requests from youth, community and estate groups around the country have been unprecedented.
Young Company Away from Home:
We have toured our youth shows to local community centres and theatres, giving young people the opportunity to perform in different venues and encounter a range of audiences. Local councils occasionally commission us to deliver forum theatre shows or educational projects. This allows us to offer our most experienced youth theatre members the opportunity to ‘step up’ to a new level of theatre practice, and receive a small fee as well.
Community Installations/ Celebrations of Space:
SPID brings local areas to life! Using our multi-disciplinary, interactive approach to space and community, we have created several celebrations of the local area and history both indoors and out. Part game, part event, featuring live music, hi-tech treasure hunts, hidden sound effects and giant audience-triggered projections onto tower blocks, these pieces of interactive community theatre are hard to describe!
